Eve, have been following this blog since you started it and today came very close to buying from "Solar Home Energy". We were told that they use "Fourth Generation" solar panels, which he claimed were more efficient than previous and did not require sunlight to function.
The price he was quoting for 2 panels and a 160 litre tank was £9424 which seemed excessive.

What company did you buy yours' from and can I be rude and ask what you paid?

It certainly is paying off at the moment - the company said I would get a 40% reduction in my hot water costs over the year; the start is good and I am waiting the next 3 months with great interest! I'll let you know.

A great result Eve.

It will be interesting to see how much you save in a whole year, including the winter.

Unfortunately I switched to British Gas earlier this year.

I was convinced by a charming young representative who visited me that his company's price would always be the lowest!

Colin - the company say I should get the cost back in 5-6 years and should save 40% of my gas bill over a year. They also say that the panels work without sun as long as there is reasonable light - whatever that means! I shall find out in due time and will let everyone know.
I was interested this morning - the temperature of the panels at 6am has been 33/34 every other morning. Today it had been raining, here, since 4.30am and at 6, the temp was 31.

Seems like a big saving Eve.

How long will it take do you think to cover the cost of installation?

I suppose it depends on how much sunshine we get over the next few years.

However, I understand that solar panels work to a degree in overcast situations.
